Indigenous Land and Data Stewards Lab
Website design + brand strategy
the Indigenous Land & Data Stewards Lab at csu
The Indigenous Land and Data Stewards Lab (ILDS Lab) studies and applies community-driven models for mentorship, research, teaching, and engagement. They restore connections with the original stewards of Indigenous knowledge systems and the lands in which they are embedded.
As a new professor, PI Dr. Dominique David-Chavez was looking for a website that could share her lab’s unique values and approaches to science. A website that could foster connection with her audience, share her research findings, and function as a resource for communities looking for guidance. We were beyond honored to help build this brand and website, and create a digital platform for sharing their amazing work!
The brand
warm, rich, grounded
The ILDS Lab is a supportive, inclusive, and rigorous research team. Grounded in their individual and shared cultural identities, this lab has created one of the richest collaborative environments we have ever worked in. For this brand, we wanted a warm palette to reflect the lab’s nurturing spirit and to integrate symbolic natural elements, such as the sun, water, and earth, that anchor both traditional and ecological knowledge.
Custom illustrations
We were able to build on a key illustration that Dr. David-Chavez had created for a publication, to capture her lab’s integration of data, science, and stewardship. We vectorized the illustration and used it strategically as a background overlay throughout the site, for a personal touch to make the site truly their own.
