Animal behavior & cognition lab at ubc
The Animal Behavior & Cognition Lab pushes animal cognition and urban ecology forward by bringing traditional tests of animal cognition (like puzzles) into the field. They study carnivores in urban spaces, discovering novel and critical insights into the evolution of intelligence, how species deal with anthropogenic disturbance, and how we can mitigate conflict between humans and urban wildlife.
When Dr. Sarah Benson-Amram approached us about this project, she had a broken lab website that hadn’t been updated in years. We were excited to help her reimagine her digital presence and design a new brand that better captured her AMAZING work in animal cognition and behavior.

THE BRAND
professional, academic, calm-but-concerned
The biggest inspiration for this brand was the wildlife they work with and the cognitive challenges facing animals in urban environments. We used puzzle-piece iconography in the logo and throughout the website to reflect the lab’s emphasis on cognition and using puzzles to measure cognition in field experiments. We wanted their audience to become captivated - as we were - by examples of adaptive behaviors in urban ecosystems. Imagery was selected to invoke both a sense of appreciation and concern for the species that share our cities.
